This past week, Gaborone has been buzzing with many activities all lined up towards the celebration of the 60 years of independence. We wake up to songs of victory and those that tell our story as Botswana playing from one radio station to another! As we reach this enormous milestone, let us pause to recognize and celebrate our heroes who paved the way for us, defying all odds to lay the foundations upon which we stand today: our botho, spirit of community & self-sustenance and above all, our resilience.

A Setswana idiom says, ‘ee anyang e leletse e ruta ee mo maleng,’ and another one says, ‘tlhako ya morago e gata ha ya pele e gatileng leng.” Let us reflect on how our leadership has evolved over time:  are we modelling the right morals and behaviors for our young ones, our future leaders? The leadership choices we make today, are they strengthening our foundations as a nation or dismantling them?

Our founding president, Rre Sir Seretse Khama said, ‘chaba e senang ngwao ke moka e suleng.’ Let’s us go back to the crossroads and rebuild our narrative as a nation. Who are we as Batswana?

“People don’t follow titles, they follow Courage,” Dr John C Maxwell. Ever since I heard this statement, I have kept it close to my heart & I have been pondering on it for a while now. Considering where we are now as a nation, economically, psychologically and otherwise, I believe courage is the much-needed trait for all and the difference maker.

Courage doesn’t mean you are winning and hitting all your goals, it’s about being committed to your why and doing what you need to always do, regardless of how you feel. Courage is not the absence of fear, but feeling the fear and doing the needful anyway.

Courage is the commitment to keep showing up, even when it looks like nothing is moving and no one is noticing you and what you are doing.

Courage unfortunately, is the door that can only be opened from the inside. No one can buy it for you, no matter how much they love you. You must develop it in the quietness of the night, in the dryness of the season, in the scary terrains where there is no one to cheer you on. The beautiful thing about courage is that when it’s all said and done, the day you finally go on stage and the lights are switched on, courage will show up and present herself, she will need no fancy and powerful introductions.

As we rise to celebrate our 60 years of independence, I invite you to define what courage means to you and how you can show up courageously, not because of what you are doing, not because of who you are doing it for, but because of your intentionality to grow to be the person you have chosen to be. Commit to show up courageously, not only for yourself but for the people you lead who are looking up to you and above all, to contribute to building our nation, a better BOTSWANA for all. PULA!

When a job ends, it can feel like the ground drops out from under you. So much of modern identity is wrapped around titles, teams, and routines that when they disappear, it’s easy to wonder, Who am I without this role? The loss isn’t just professional, it’s personal. But that discomfort, as painful as it is, often marks the beginning of something deeper and more honest.
